I’ve always been a fan of Sonja Corbitt’s writing. She cuts straight to the heart of a particular spiritual matter, and she is very authentic in relaying her own wrestling with certain vices. It’s heartening to know one is not alone in one’s faith journey, and she and Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers certainly deliver a gentle nudge that convicts and clarifies one thing we often miss as Catholics: truly allowing the Bible as the Living Word to transform us.
That’s why their new book, Ignite: Read the Bible Like Never Before, is such a refreshing read. Each author presents his or her unique expertise to explain the ancient art of lectio divina in a format appropriately called L.O.V.E. (listen, observe, verbalize, and entrust – created by Corbitt). Each chapter unravels and unveils specific questions that most Catholics truly don’t understand – at least not fully. They explain what lectio divina is, how to practice it as a prayer, and then they take the reader on a journey through the who/what/when/where of the Bible. Once that is complete, the reader gleans more deeply into the insights of the Old and New Testaments and how to discern God’s voice among all the other competing noises in our frenetic culture.
Ignite is not necessarily a swift and easy read, but it’s an important and necessary one. Regardless of where you are in your faith – novice or veteran – you will come to see God as breathing His life into yours through the Bible. Even seemingly mundane verses you may have heard proclaimed from the pulpit a thousand times (Good Samaritan parable, anyone?), you will gather the process of truly listening to God speak to you through a word or phrase – a warm flame that will ignite your love for Him more deeply.
Among the countless sea of books from which you can choose nowadays, why not select something that will enrich your faith in the most basic but also most meaningful and powerful way – through reading Scripture so that God truly comes alive for you every single day?
Suitable for group study or individual contemplation, Ignite will open your heart and encourage you to present your messes, flaws, desires, and needs to Him with total honesty and authentic vulnerability.
